Five Things I Do When I Don’t Feel Like Creating Even Though That Is My Job
There are some days I wake up so thrilled that this is my life and I am creating earrings, art, and freelancing design services. Then there are others when I wake up and want to go radio silent on social media for the day and not share any aspect of my business.
For starters, having your own business takes an immense amount of discipline. Even on the days you don’t feel like creating, you still need to be getting work done during the hours you set for yourself to work.
5 Things I Do on the Days I Don’t Feel Like Creating
1) Social Media Drafts
I don’t know about you, but on the days I don’t feel like creating, I typically don’t feel like getting in front of the camera either. I like to make sure I always have a video or two in my drafts for the days I just don’t feel like doing it.
2) Check My Inventory and Spreadsheets
Boring, I know. But have you ever experienced a busy week or market or forgotten to print a receipt? The you who is doing your taxes in a few months, the you who is at a market and realizes you ran out of business cards, and the you who forgot to take a pair of earrings off your site even though someone bought them at your last event - thanks you for taking the time to get organized.
3) Clean!!
I used to be the most organized person I knew when I was in college, and when it comes to getting things done and making lists, I’m still your girl. When it comes to a clean space, though - sorry! Don’t mind all my beads on the ground, supplies stacking up in an out-of-sight, out-of-mind place, and please don’t mind the endless sticky notes EVERYWHERE. Admittedly, I do still live out of boxes, which makes it a little tricky to stay organized, BUT that is no excuse for my mess. On the days I don’t feel like creating, I clean my studio the best I can because I firmly believe our physical space affects our mental space.
4) Admin Work
“Isn’t this the same as number 2?” No, it’s not. I like to call this admin work, laptop time, or power hour, and it’s a time I set aside where I respond to all emails, reach out to current clients about a status update on their projects, reply to comments on Instagram or TikTok, go through my viral videos and write down what tutorials people want to see, write down blog ideas or ideas for my bi-weekly newsletter, clean up my Pinterest and make sure all my reels and inventory are uploaded on there, plan out my next week of content - you get the gist. All of the business stuff that isn’t necessarily boring but helps boost my current projects and sets me up for my next busy week.
5) DREAM
Dreaming is one of the things that keeps this business going. I have to remind myself daily that we can have everything we want in life - just maybe not all at the same time - and that’s okay! This is where I am at now, and I know that it is going to get bigger and bigger. I am dreaming of that day, but I am also living a dream that I once dreamt for myself, and that is a beautiful thing. On the days you don’t feel like creating, start dreaming of your next piece or series or drop - whatever it may be. If you allow yourself the time and space to think about it and envision it, it will come true!
Also, something important to note is that you don’t always have to be working. Set your hours to what works for you and make the most out of them! Don’t forget to play and take time away from it all. A day off won’t kill your business!
Just a couple of pieces of advice from one artist to another! You got it, and I can’t wait to see what you create next!
